Do you feel like your relationship is stuck? Does it feel like you and your partner can’t communicate about minor topics without the conversation turning into an argument? Do you feel misunderstood by your partner? These are common expressions we hear at the beginning of therapy.
To help couples work through these complex issues, therapists at STCS use Emotionally Focused Therapy (EFT), a counseling approach that addresses the root causes of couple conflict. This therapy model specifically focuses on how you and your partner communicate and not what you and your partner communicate about. EFT focuses on creating a secure connection within the relationship by helping couples discover how to stop destructive communication cycles and implement tools that encourage connection in moments of distress. The therapist will join with couples where they are, help them make sense of the painful interaction patterns and how their desire to connect can sometimes feed the negative patterns. The therapist will then assist the couple in finding ways to re-connect with one another, so both partners with a felt sense of feeling heard and understood.
